Back to School for Parents

August 29th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Lifestyle

Whether you’re a parent or educator, use these resources and tips to prepare for the new school year.

Check-Ups and Immunizations

It’s a good idea to take your child in for a physical and eye exam before school starts. If your child will be participating in a sports activity, your family doctor may have to sign a release form to permit your child to participate.

Most schools require your child’s immunization shots are up-to-date. Remember that each state has different immunization requirements. Let your healthcare provider know if you have any questions or concerns about the vaccines your child is scheduled to receive.

School entry may require documentation of immunization records, so be sure to contact your school ahead of time to find out what might be required, and be sure to bring any school forms for your healthcare provider to fill out and sign. Failure to keep immunizations up-to-date could result in your child not being able to attend school. It’s also helpful to get a copy of record of the shots for yourself and your child’s school.

Shopping for School Supplies

During the month of August, some states offer a “sales tax holiday”, which means that certain products won’t be taxed during a set period of time. This is a great opportunity to save money on back-to-school items including clothes, shoes, and supplies. Check to see if your state participates.

Plan Healthful Lunches

As you prepare to send your children back to school, remember that nutrition is an important factor in academic performance. Studies have shown that children who eat healthful, balanced breakfasts and lunches are more alert throughout the school day and earn higher grades than those who have an unhealthy diet. Get tips on packing a healthful lunch.

Financial Assistance for Families

There are several programs and resources available to ease the financial burden of going back to school, including low cost lunches and affordable health insurance. Find out if your family qualifies for the National School Lunch Program or subsidized health care.

The U.S. Congressional Twitter Directory

August 29th, 2011 | 1 Comment | Posted in Lifestyle

Earlier this year, President Obama called on Americans to reach out to Congress regarding the debt-ceiling debacle. And a lot of people made their voices heard. The day after Obama’s televised speech, the Capitol’s switchboard was overwhelmed with 40,000 calls per hour and email traffic swamped congressional servers to a near halt.

So with phone lines and e-mail servers clogged up, the FearLess staff asked a simple question.

“Um, what about Twitter?”

We searched online for an official Twitter directory for the United States Congress, but we couldn’t find an updated and easy-to-use directory that contained links to Congressional members’ Twitter handles. So we rolled up our sleeves and built the damn thing ourselves.

Below you will find an alphabetical list of states with names of U.S. Congressmen and women. Each name links to the elected official’s Twitter page. It’s simple and efficient. Which makes it the complete opposite of Congress’ ability to reach a compromise.

We recommend the following guidelines for tweeting members of Congress:

1. Only tweet Senators and Representatives from your state.
2. Be honest with your feelings, but don’t be rude or vulgar.
3. Use the hashtag #FearLessForce.

Lastly, please share this Twitter directory with your peeps. We want as many people to be able to communicate with members of the 112th United States Congress. And hopefully we won’t be responsible for bringing out the Fail Whale.

New look. Same vans.

August 9th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in jamadots News, Uncategorized

Have you seen our newly wrapped vans around your community? The new design is fun, colorful,  informational, and easy to spot. We think the new design says a lot about us, the products and services we offer (some you may just now be learning about), how to contact us (including all of our online and social media addresses), and our local commitment to the UP communities we service and call home.

So, the next time you see one of our vans, give the guys a wave, a honk, or a hello and let them know how bold of a statement the new design is making. We would also like to encourage you to provide your feedback by commenting to this post.
